Cheryl Jacques: An LGBT Advocate and Massachusetts Legislator

Early Life and Legal Career

Cheryl Jacques earned her J.D. from Boston College in 1984 and her LL.M. from Suffolk University Law School in 1987. Before entering politics, she served as an assistant district attorney in Middlesex County and an assistant Massachusetts attorney general.

Massachusetts State Senate

In 1992, Jacques became one of the first openly gay legislators in Massachusetts, serving six terms in the state senate. She broke barriers by becoming the first woman and first lesbian to chair the senate's judiciary committee.

Human Rights Campaign

From January 2004, Jacques served as President of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) for 11 months. She addressed the Democratic National Convention that year. However, the HRC board terminated her employment on November 30, 2004, citing management and philosophical disagreements. Jacques faced criticism for HRC's lack of opposition to same-sex marriage bans in several southern states.

Activism and Advocacy

Post-HRC, Jacques has become a nationally recognized speaker and writer on LGBTQ+ rights, civil rights, tolerance, and political correctness. She serves as a legal consultant for Brody, Hardoon, Perkins & Kesten and a diversity and inclusion consultant for various corporations and organizations.

Personal Life and Political Commentary

Jacques resides in Silver Spring, Maryland, with her partner, Jennifer Wade Chrysler, and their twin sons, Timmy and Tommy. She is a political commentator for Q Television, hosting a weekly program titled "Political IQ."
