Cesare Maldini: A Footballing Legend

Early Life and Playing Career

Cesare Maldini was born in Trieste, Italy, in 1932. He began his professional football career with Triestina in 1954, and in 1954 he joined AC Milan, where he would become a club legend.

For 13 seasons at Milan, Maldini was the linchpin of the defense. Despite his towering height of 182 cm, he was an agile and mobile player, with superb positional awareness and aerial ability. He also had the versatility to play as a right-back or midfielder when needed.

In 1963, Maldini captained Milan to victory in the European Cup, the club's first major international trophy. He also represented Italy 14 times, playing in the 1962 World Cup and 1964 European Cup.

Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, Maldini began a successful coaching career. He served as assistant coach at Milan for five years and later as an assistant to the Italy national team, helping the Azzurri win the 1982 World Cup.

In 1996, Maldini was appointed head coach of Italy. He led the team to the 1998 World Cup but resigned after the quarter-finals, despite the team's undefeated record. Maldini then returned to Milan as caretaker coach before eventually taking up the role of manager of the Paraguay national team.

Personal Life

Maldini is married to Maria Luisa, and they have six children: daughters Monica, Donatella, and Valentina, and sons Paolo, Alessandro, and Piercesare. Four of their children have pursued careers in sports, including Paolo, who is a legendary defender for Milan and current captain of the Italy national team.
