Chloe Temtchin: A Voice of Resilience and Inspiration
Early Life and Musical BeginningsChloe Temtchin, an American singer-songwriter from New York City, began her musical journey at the tender age of six. Her inspiration stemmed from the gospel music she heard at the Harlem Baptist Church, where her father would take her. She honed her vocal abilities at Berklee College of Music in Boston.
Debut and Breakthrough
In 2009, Temtchin released her debut album, "Between Day & Daydream." Two years later, she garnered recognition by winning the Avon Singing Talent Search with her song "Step Up," which went on to be used in Avon's global advertising campaign. She performed as a backing vocalist for Ne-Yo on "Late Night with David Letterman," sang for the American Express 100th anniversary commercial, and appeared on NY-1 News' "Where in The Truck is Chloe?" segment.
Battling PVOD: A Journey of Determination
In 2008, Temtchin's health took a turn for the worse with unexplained coughing and shortness of breath on stage. Misdiagnosed for years, she was eventually diagnosed in 2013 with pulmonary veno-occlusive disease (PVOD), a rare and life-threatening condition. PVOD, which increases pressure in the heart's arteries, left her heart enlarged to three times its normal size.
Music as a Lifeline
Amidst her health struggles, Temtchin found solace in music. "I would lock myself in my room and write songs," she recalled. "It was my salvation from being consumed by my condition. I reached a level of honesty and truth that I'd never reached before." The urgency to create motivated her, as she realized the uncertain time she had left.
"Be Brave": An Album of Hope and Healing
In 2015, Temtchin released "Be Brave," an album hailed by the New York Post as a "heartbreaking collection of pop songs documenting her fight for survival and the healing that followed." The album, produced by Toby Gad, featured the uplifting title track, written shortly after she was released from intensive care.
Inspirational Influence
Emmy Karlberg, writing in Bust magazine, praised Temtchin's resilience and message of hope. "Her signature song, 'Be Brave,' is a bright, energetic bluegrass-tinged anthem with the kind of banjo that still rules the pop charts," Karlberg wrote. "The title, of course, is a reminder of the astonishing bravery it takes to live a life with illness or disability..."
Finding Joy and Acceptance
Accompanied by her ever-present oxygen tank and nasal cannula, dubbed "Steve Martin," Temtchin has embraced her condition and continued to perform. While reactions from strangers can sometimes be awkward, she remains unfazed.
A Holistic Approach to Health
Temtchin adheres to a strict vegetarian diet and incorporates regular exercise into her routine. She focuses on nurturing her body and mind, believing in the power of self-healing. "I try to stay positive and not listen to people who tell me how sick I'm going to get," she said. "I make music, I perform. When I'm creating, I'm in a world where there's no such thing as pulmonary hypertension."
Legacy of Courage and Hope
Temtchin remains optimistic about the future, despite the uncertainty of her condition. "I should have been dead five years ago, so who knows what tomorrow holds," she said. "I believe there's always hope." Through her music, her story, and her unwavering spirit, Chloe Temtchin continues to inspire countless others facing life's challenges.
