Biography of David Morales

David Morales, an American house DJ, was born in 1962 to Puerto Rican immigrants. He grew up in Brooklyn, a tumultuous but incredibly interesting neighborhood in New York City. While formal education was not highly regarded there, the experience gained from the streets was invaluable. This is why David dropped out of school at an early age, preferring the life of a "cool guy" over mundane teaching notes. However, his interests were far from robbing people on the streets. David was involved in much more exciting things. He worked as a DJ at the Paradise Garage discotheque, which is now considered a cult club and the birthplace of the American house music movement.

Early Career at Paradise Garage

In 1985, Paradise Garage had a dubious reputation as a club where very strange people gathered. Larry Levan, a true deity in the DJ world, was in charge of the club. It is worth mentioning that one of his students was Paul Oakenfold, who specifically crossed the ocean to take a few lessons from the maestro. David Morales, on the other hand, did not need to go anywhere as he lived just a couple of blocks away from the club. It is not surprising that David spent round-the-clock at Paradise Garage. The night he was entrusted to stand behind the DJ booth alone was the best night of his life. "It was a true gift of fate," Morales recalls. "Once I got behind the booth, I played records for 22 hours straight. I would have played more, but I was forcibly pulled out onto the street."

Red Zone and Fame

The experience gained at Paradise Garage helped David Morales become a resident of yet another famous club. He spent nearly six years of his life at The Red Zone, serving as the art director and DJ from 1989 to 1995. During this time, he experienced everything from wild Hollywood star parties to bloody mafia showdowns. Both gangsters and celebrities were attracted to The Red Zone because everyone knew that there was no better DJ than Morales in New York. With such a reputation, finding decent work in New York was very easy, especially in the early 90s when house music was rapidly gaining popularity and pop stars were rushing to make dance remixes of their own creations.

Collaborations and Grammy

During this golden era, Morales had clients such as Michael Jackson, Madonna, Tina Turner, Toni Braxton, Whitney Houston, Jamiroquai, and Mariah Carey. He had particularly close relationships with Mariah Carey, not only working on remixes of her hits but also "sound designing" her albums. This did not go unnoticed by music critics. Morales was nominated three times for a Grammy award as the best sound producer and remixer. In 1998, he finally won the Grammy for his remixes of Carey's songs.

Success in the New Millennium

Entering the new millennium, David Morales became not only the recipient of the most prestigious award in the American pop industry but also the co-owner of influential US house labels. Some of the most interesting artists in American dance music, such as Hector Romeo and Satoshi Tomiie, released their works on Def Mix and Definity Records. Today, David Morales has the reputation of a true pop star. He hosts two dance shows on national radio stations, serves as a consultant for American MTV, and is one of the inspirations behind MTV's special parties at the best clubs in Ibiza, Spain. Additionally, Morales has just finished working on his own solo project, which will premiere this summer.
