Chris Anderson: Visionary Curator of TED
Chris Anderson, the esteemed curator of the annual TED conference, was born in Pakistan in 1957.
Early Life and Education
Anderson spent his childhood in Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan. He received his secondary education in England and graduated from the University of Oxford in 1978 with a degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics.
Journalism and Publishing
Anderson embarked on a career in journalism, including work at a pirate radio station in the Seychelles. In 1985, he founded Future Publishing, a company specializing in computer magazines. Over time, the company's portfolio expanded to include publications on music, video games, IT, and design.
Entrepreneurial Success
In 1994, Anderson moved to San Francisco and continued to grow his publishing empire. He launched Business 2.0 magazine and several websites, including the popular gaming portal IGN.com. Future Publishing grew to employ over 1,500 people and publish 130 magazines. The company's shares were listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1999.
The TED Acquisition
In 2001, Anderson left Future Publishing to focus on the TED conference, which had been acquired by his non-profit organization, The Sapling Foundation, that same year. He redefined TED's mission to "ideas worth spreading."
TED's Expansion and Impact
With the launch of TED.com, the conference's videos reached a global audience. Anderson also established the TED Prize, recognizing individuals making significant contributions to the world.
Personal Life
Chris Anderson currently resides in New York City. He is married to Jacqueline Novogratz, founder of Acumen Fund.
