Muriel Siebert: Trailblazing Businesswoman
Widely recognized as the first woman to gain a seat on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), Muriel Siebert's achievement was groundbreaking. In 1967, when she became a member, only 1,365 men held such positions.
Financial Career and Founding of Siebert & Co.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Siebert launched her financial career at brokerage firms, including Robert Brimberg's renowned Brimberg & Co. In 1967, she established her own company, Muriel Siebert & Co., Inc., specializing in research and analytics.
Breaking Barriers on the NYSE
That same year, Siebert applied for NYSE membership. Despite her impressive credentials, she faced significant resistance, with nine of her initial supporters declining. Financial constraints also arose, as the seat cost $445,000. After securing support and financing, she finally gained membership on December 28, 1967.
Champion for Ethical Brokerage
In 1975, the Securities and Exchange Commission allowed brokers to negotiate their commission rates. Siebert strongly opposed the prevalence of low-balling, arguing for fair compensation for services.
Banking Leadership
In 1977, Siebert was appointed as Superintendent of Banks for the State of New York, overseeing the operations of all banks in the state. She managed the industry exceptionally well during a challenging time, with no bank closures under her tenure.
Post-Banking Career and Legacy
After leaving the banking industry, Siebert returned to her firm. She unsuccessfully ran for the U.S. Senate and continues to serve as President of Muriel Siebert & Co. Inc. She actively comments on financial markets and supports women in the industry.
Empowering Women
In 1998, Siebert became President of the New York Women's Agenda, launching the Financial Literacy for Women program, which continues to empower women financially.
