Christine Gregoire: A Trailblazing Democratic Governor
Early Life and EducationChristine Gregoire was born in Auburn, Washington, and raised by her mother after her parents' divorce. She graduated from Auburn High School in 1965 and went on to earn a bachelor's degree from the University of Washington in 1969.
Legal Career
After college, Gregoire attended Gonzaga University School of Law, graduating in 1977. She joined the Washington State Attorney General's Office, where she specialized in investigating child abuse cases and working with social services to find safe placements for children.
Family and Health
Gregoire married Mike Gregoire, a physician, in 1979. They have two daughters, Courtney and Michelle, the latter of whom became a professional soccer player.
In 2003, Gregoire was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer. She underwent surgery and successfully recovered, but she often speaks about her experience to highlight healthcare issues.
Political Career
Gubernatorial Race of 2004Gregoire ran for governor in 2004 and won the Democratic primary with 60% of the vote. In the general election, she faced Republican Dino Rossi. Gregoire campaigned on healthcare issues, particularly stem cell research.
The election was extremely close, with initial results showing Gregoire's victory by 261 votes. A machine recount narrowed the margin to 42 votes, and a hand recount gave Gregoire a 10-vote lead. However, a court ruling allowed the addition of ballots from one county, resulting in a margin of 130 votes for Gregoire. Republicans challenged the election, alleging irregularities, but the courts dismissed their claims.
Governor of Washington
Gregoire served as governor from 2005 to 2013. During her tenure, she focused on healthcare, education, and economic development.
In 2009, Washington state faced a budget shortfall, leading to lawsuits from unions over planned salary cuts.
Post-Governorship
After leaving office, Gregoire became a professor at the University of Washington Evans School of Public Policy and Governance. She continued to advocate for healthcare and education policy.
Christine Gregoire's trailblazing political career made her a symbol of Democratic Party values and a role model for aspiring politicians. Her commitment to social justice, public service, and unwavering perseverance left a lasting impact on the state of Washington.
