Childhood and Education

Thomas William Wolf was born on November 17, 1948, in York, Pennsylvania. He grew up in Mount Wolf, a town named after his ancestor. Raised as a Methodist, he later converted to the Episcopal Church. Wolf attended The Hill School, a prestigious boarding school in Pottstown, graduating in 1967.

He went on to Dartmouth College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in government. He also holds a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) from the University of London and a Doctor of Philosophy in political science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. While at Dartmouth, Wolf was part of the Peace Corps and served for two years in India.

Business and Early Political Career

After graduating, Wolf worked as a forklift driver at Wolf Organization Inc., his family's construction supply company based in York. In 1985, he and two partners bought out the company. During Governor Robert Casey's administration, Wolf served on the Governor's Economic Development Council and the Pennsylvania Legislative Commission on Urban Schools.

Head of Revenue and Gubernatorial Campaigns

In 2007, Governor Ed Rendell nominated Wolf as Pennsylvania's Secretary of Revenue. He served from January 2007 until his resignation in November 2008. Wolf planned to run for governor in the 2010 election, but he had to step back to rescue Wolf Organization from near bankruptcy.

Governor of Pennsylvania

Wolf was inaugurated as the 47th Governor of Pennsylvania on January 20, 2015. As governor, he imposed a moratorium on the death penalty, reinstated a ban on fracking, and vetoed a budget passed by the Republican-controlled Pennsylvania General Assembly.

Second Term and Legacy

Wolf was reelected in 2018, becoming the first governor in Pennsylvania history to win two terms while losing his home county in both elections. He has been praised for his progressive policies, such as Medicaid expansion, LGBTQ+ rights, and environmental protection.

Wolf's tenure has also been marked by controversy, including allegations of corruption and a state Supreme Court ruling that declared his administration's school funding formula unconstitutional. Nevertheless, he remains a prominent figure in Pennsylvania politics and beyond.
