Cancer Survivor Chris Johnson
Early Detection and TreatmentChris Johnson overcame the hurdle of breast cancer, one of the most common and dangerous diseases. Her recovery was made possible by early detection, expert medical care, and the support of her loved ones.
Many women are accustomed to receiving a letter after their annual mammogram, requesting them to come in for a re-check. Sometimes, the scan may not accurately capture everything, leading to a recall. This happened to Chris Johnson in 2007, just days before Christmas. Having received such letters in the past, she decided to postpone the matter amidst the holiday preparations.
It was only after the festivities that Chris finally read the letter, which requested another mammogram due to a finding on her scan. The area in question had been clear in the past, causing her concern. Although she tried to convince herself it was just another cyst, like those previously found, she couldn't shake the feeling of unease.
Three weeks passed before Chris was able to schedule the re-check mammogram. This was followed by a referral to a surgeon, and on February 14, 2008, Chris underwent a biopsy. The results showed ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), also known as Stage 0 breast cancer.
Diagnosis and Treatment Plan
Upon hearing the word "cancer," Chris felt like the surgeon couldn't possibly be speaking about her. She experienced a surreal sense of detachment, as if observing the situation from the outside. Reality eventually settled in, and she underwent the recommended lumpectomy, going home the same day.
A couple of weeks later, Chris visited the surgeon again, who assured her that her scar was healing well. He advised her to consult with an oncologist to discuss treatment options.
Chris Johnson and her husband decided to handpick their oncologist. They called Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) and spoke with Doug White, an informational specialist. He described the programs available at CTCA.
From the initial paperwork to the warm and welcoming staff, Chris immediately felt the level of attention to detail and patient care at CTCA. During her first consultation, she met with Dr. Citrin, who clearly explained the nuances of her condition. He even used diagrams to help her visualize everything. He sent Chris for a CT scan to ensure all areas of concern were identified. The scan revealed two additional areas of concern.
Chris felt confident in her choice of CTCA and decided to continue her care there. In May 2008, Dr. Ray performed a lumpectomy on her. He also removed the scar from her previous surgery. Chris was left with only a faint scar from all the procedures. She stayed overnight for observation after the surgery. A friend who visited Chris at CTCA was amazed by the exceptional care she received.
Chris also underwent radiation therapy. She opted for the MammoSite® Targeted Intraoperative Radiation Therapy, a procedure that involves placing a balloon device in the area where the cancer was located. Treatment took place over five days, with two sessions per day. The only side effect she experienced was minor fatigue.
Importance of Early Detection
Dr. Citrin emphasized that early detection was key to Chris Johnson's successful treatment. Having gone through the ordeal, Chris became an advocate for regular mammograms. While one of her sisters had been diligent about annual exams, the other hadn't been to the clinic in several years. At Chris's urging, both went for mammograms. One of them was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer. She immediately reached out to CTCA and is now celebrating five years of being a survivor, having been honored at CTCA's annual Celebration of Life event in 2014.
Gratitude and Community Involvement
Chris Johnson is grateful for the care she received at CTCA. She also recognizes the invaluable support and prayers of her loved ones. Today, she enjoys excellent health. She is an active member of the CTCA Cancer Fighters and Caregivers Community, offering support to newly diagnosed patients. Chris participates in various events, sharing her story and emphasizing the importance of regular screenings to women.
As Chris approaches the tenth anniversary of her recovery, she cherishes the milestones she's witnessed during that time—her son's growth, her father's 90th birthday celebration, the weddings of friends and family, travels, helping others, and simply embracing life.
