Early Life and Career Beginnings
Potter grew up in Ontario, Canada, as the oldest of three sons. His father, Ron Potter, was a former football player and coach for the Ontario Mustangs, and his mother, Judith Potter, was a beloved singer who gave up her career to dedicate her time to the family. From a young age, Potter loved hockey, baseball, and football, and also participated in amateur theater. He excelled in sports during his school years and considered pursuing a career as an athlete, but his father did not allow him to do so. Later, he dropped out of college and decided to pursue a career as a rock musician. However, realizing his true passion for theater, he turned to acting and soon became a professional stage actor.
Acting Career
Before fully dedicating himself to acting and television work, Potter had to work on an oil rig in Northern Canada, sell cars, and then become an insurance agent. However, he eventually left the insurance company. He took his first steps towards fame with numerous commercials and a role in "Material World" before finally gaining attention after filming "Kung Fu: The Legend Continues" in 1992. This role earned him a contract with Warner Bros. In 1993, he landed his first film role, which became a hit in both Canada and the United States, bringing him recognition after years of acting in television series.
Music Career
In his free time from filming, Potter sings and writes songs. He even released an album called "Tourmaline," for which he wrote all the songs himself. He plays guitar, drums, and keyboards with his musical band in Toronto.
Later Work
In 2000, Potter appeared in the feature film "Rocket's Red Glare" and received the "Best Actor" award at the New York Award ceremony for his performance. He also appeared in the first season of the series "Queer as Folk" and the ABC mini-series "A Wrinkle in Time" in 2003.
