Chris Sununu: Governor of New Hampshire
Political LineageChris Sununu is an American politician and the 82nd Governor of New Hampshire, serving since January 5, 2017. He is a member of the Republican Party and comes from a prominent political family. His father, John Henry Sununu, was the former Governor of New Hampshire and Chief of Staff to President George H.W. Bush, while his brother, John Edward Sununu, served as a U.S. Senator from New Hampshire.
Education and Business Career
Sununu obtained a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Upon graduation, he became the General Manager of Waterville Valley Resort and later the owner and operator of Sununu Enterprises, a waste removal company.
Executive Council of New Hampshire
In 2010, Sununu was elected to the New Hampshire Executive Council, a five-member advisory body to the Governor. In 2011, he voted in favor of state funding for Planned Parenthood. However, in 2015, he voted against funding after learning about the organization's use of fetal tissue in medical research.
Governorship
Sununu announced his candidacy for Governor in 2016, receiving support from Ohio Governor John Kasich. In a closely contested election, Sununu defeated Democratic candidate Colin Van Ostern in November 2016. He became the first Republican in a decade to win the New Hampshire governorship.
During his tenure, Sununu has focused on economic development, job creation, and fiscal responsibility. He has also supported education reform and infrastructure improvements. In 2018, he was re-elected with 52.8% of the vote, defeating Democratic challenger Molly Kelly.
