Louis Juchault de Lamoricière: French General and Statesman
Early Life and Military CareerFrench Divisional General Louis Juchault de Lamoricière was born in 1806 in Nantes, France. He distinguished himself in numerous battles and expeditions in Algeria and Morocco, culminating in the capture of Abd al-Kadir in 1847, which effectively ended the Algerian conquest.
Political Career in France
In 1846, Lamoricière was elected to the Chamber of Deputies. On February 24, 1848, during the French Revolution, he was appointed Commander of the National Guard by King Louis-Philippe, a late concession that proved ineffective in quelling the uprising. Lamoricière's hesitation to use force against the people contributed to the success of the rebellion.
After the June Insurrection, Lamoricière assisted General Cavaignac in its suppression. He subsequently served as Minister of War and was later appointed Ambassador to Russia. He also held the position of Vice President of the Legislative Assembly.
Imprisonment and Return to France
Lamoricière was arrested and exiled in 1851 following Louis Napoleon's coup d'état. He spent the next several years in exile.
Command of the Papal Army
In 1860, Lamoricière was surprisingly appointed Commander of the Papal Army, despite his known republican sentiments. He led the army in the Battle of Castelfidardo, where he was defeated by Piedmontese forces under General Cialdini. Lamoricière fled to Ancona, where he and his garrison were taken prisoner.
Later Life
Lamoricière spent his last years in France, where he died in 1865. He is remembered as a skilled general and a complex political figure who played a significant role in French history during the turbulent mid-19th century.
