Early Life and Education

Chris Hadfield was born on August 29, 1959, in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. He graduated from the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario, in 1982, and the University of Waterloo in 1982. In 1994, he earned a Master's degree in Aviation Systems from the University of Tennessee.

Military Service

After graduating from college and flight school, Hadfield served in the air defense forces of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD).

NASA Astronaut

In 1992, Hadfield was selected by NASA as an astronaut candidate as an international mission specialist.

Spaceflights

Hadfield made two spaceflights during his career. His first flight was aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis on the STS-74 mission, which launched on November 12, 1995, and lasted 8 days, 4 hours, 30 minutes, and 44 seconds. His second flight was aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour on the STS-100 mission, which launched on April 19, 2001, and lasted 11 days, 21 hours, 30 minutes, and 00 seconds. In total, Hadfield spent 19 days, 20 hours, 00 minutes, and 44 seconds in space.

Awards and Honors

Hadfield was awarded two NASA Space Flight Medals, in 1996 and 2001.
Personal Life

Hadfield is married to Helen Walter and they have three children. He enjoys playing volleyball and soccer.
