Early Life and Political Beginnings
Grassley was born in New Hartford, Iowa, and attended the University of Northern Iowa. After serving in the United States Army, he returned home and entered politics. He served in the Iowa House of Representatives from 1959 to 1974 and in the United States House of Representatives from 1975 to 1981.

In 1980, Grassley was elected to the U.S. Senate. He has since been re-elected seven times, making him the longest-serving senator in Iowa history. As a member of the Republican Party, he has held numerous influential positions.
