Early Life and Education

Born on May 11, 1979, in Nantes, France, Johanna Rolland completed her education at the prestigious Lille Institute of Political Studies in 2001.

Political Beginnings

Following her graduation, Rolland embarked on her political career in 2003 in the town of Le Creusot. In 2005, she returned to her hometown of Nantes and became a parliamentary assistant to Jean-Marc Ayrault, leader of the Socialist Party in the National Assembly.

Municipal and Regional Roles

Her political ascent continued in 2008 when she was elected to the Nantes City Council and appointed Deputy Mayor. In 2011, she was elected to the General Council of the Loire-Atlantique department.

Mayorship of Nantes

After Ayrault's appointment as Prime Minister of France in 2012, Rolland served as Deputy Mayor under the new Mayor, Patrick Rimbert. On March 30, 2014, she led her list to victory in the second round of the Nantes municipal elections, securing 56.22% of the vote. On April 4, 2014, she became the first woman Mayor of Nantes, receiving the unanimous support of the 51 Socialist councilors.

Regional and European Leadership

Rolland's influence extended beyond the city of Nantes. On April 16, 2014, she was elected President of Nantes Métropole, a metropolitan area comprising 24 municipalities and 600,000 inhabitants. In November of the same year, she became the President of Eurocities, an association of 130 European cities.
