Education and Career
Zhang Junxiong is a lawyer by profession, having graduated from National Taiwan University in 1960. He served as a legislator in the Legislative Yuan (parliament) from 1983 to 2000.
Role in the Democratic Progressive Party
Zhang played a key role in the establishment of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which came to power in 2000. He served as the campaign manager for Chen Shui-bian and as the secretary-general of his administration.
Premiership (2000-2002)
Zhang was appointed Premier by President Chen Shui-bian and served from 2000 to 2002.
Later Career
In 2005, Zhang became the chairman of the Taipei-based Straits Exchange Foundation, a semi-governmental organization authorized to conduct cross-strait contacts with mainland China in the absence of official relations.
Return to the Premiership (2007-2008)
Zhang was appointed Premier a second time in 2007 after the resignation of Su Tseng-chang. He was seen as a "technical" premier who would serve as a caretaker until the 2008 presidential election.
