Ivar Godmanis: A Political and Scientific Journey
Early Life and Scientific CareerIvars Godmanis was born on November 27, 1951, in Riga, Latvia. He studied physics at the University of Latvia from 1968 to 1973, specializing in solid-state physics. In 1973, Godmanis became a research associate at the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences of Latvia. He continued his studies, earning a doctorate in physics in 1983 or 1984.
Political Beginnings
Godmanis began his political career in the late 1980s as a member of the Popular Front of Latvia, a movement advocating for Latvia's independence through democratic means. In 1989, he was elected deputy chairman of the organization.
First Prime Minister of Independent Latvia
After the Popular Front's victory in the 1990 elections, Godmanis was elected to the Supreme Soviet and became head of the Popular Front faction. In May 1990, he became the first Prime Minister of the restored Republic of Latvia. Godmanis held this position until July 1993.
Academic Achievements and Return to Politics
While serving as Prime Minister, Godmanis also pursued his academic interests. He completed a course in financial and business management in Germany in 1993. After leaving the government, he briefly retired from politics but later returned as a member of the Latvian Way party.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance
In 1998, Godmanis was elected to Parliament and became Minister of Finance in Vilnis Krištopans' government. In 2002, he unsuccessfully ran for re-election to Parliament.
Chairman of the Latvian Way Party
After becoming chairman of the Latvian Way party in 2004, Godmanis played a key role in supporting Latvia's accession to the European Union. He was re-elected to Parliament in 2006 and served as Minister of the Interior in Aigars Kalvītis' government.
Prime Minister for a Second Time
In 2007, following a government crisis, Godmanis was nominated by President Valdis Zatlers as Prime Minister. Despite protests from some parties, the Parliament approved his cabinet. Godmanis led the government until 2009.
Post-Prime Ministership and Honors
After leaving office, Godmanis remained active in public life. He was awarded the Order of the Three Stars in 1995 and the Commemorative Badge of the Defender of the Barricades of 1991. He also authored several books on history and politics.
Personal Life
Ivars Godmanis is married and has three children. He is an avid tennis player and enjoys music, having hosted a radio show on rock music from 2003 to 2007.
