Early Life and Career
Born in 1952 in Tirana, Fatos Nano graduated with a degree in economics from the capital city's university. He began his career at the Central Committee of the Albanian Party of Labor.
Economic Advisor to Enver Hoxha
During the reign of Enver Hoxha, known as the "leader of the Albanian people," Nano served as his economic advisor. Despite this position, he gained a reputation in Albania and the West as a liberal-minded figure advocating for radical political and economic reforms.
Allegations and Legal Action
In 2003, Italian magazine "Espresso" published an article alleging Nano's involvement in the Italo-Albanian mafia. The article, citing materials from the Italian прокуратура, led Nano to file a defamation lawsuit against the weekly.
"Unsinkable" Premier
Despite the allegations, Nano has maintained his political career. He has the distinction of being Albania's fourth-time prime minister, having taken office again on July 30, 2020. This has earned him the nickname "the unsinkable."
Post-Communism Career
After the collapse of the communist regime in Albania in 1990, Nano worked in the State Planning Commission and the government. In 1991, he was appointed prime minister for the first time, but was forced to resign due to a general strike.
Imprisonment and Amnesty
In 1993, Nano was arrested and sentenced to 12 years in prison on charges of fraud involving international humanitarian aid. He was pardoned in 1997 by then-President Salih Berisha.
