Muhammad Ghannouchi: A Political Figure of Tunisian History
Temporary President of TunisiaMuhammad Ghannouchi served as the temporary President of Tunisia for a brief period from January 14 to 15, 2011. Following the flight of former President Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali amidst the "Second Jasmine Revolution," Ghannouchi assumed the presidency in accordance with Article 56 of the Tunisian Constitution.
Premiership and the "Second Jasmine Revolution"
Ghannouchi had been the Prime Minister of Tunisia since November 17, 1999. In the wake of the "Second Jasmine Revolution," which led to the overthrow of Ben Ali, Ghannouchi initially became the temporary president. However, the Constitutional Council later ruled that Article 57 of the Constitution was more applicable, leading to the appointment of Fouad Mebazaa as the temporary president.
Formation of a Coalition Government
Despite his brief tenure as temporary president, Ghannouchi played a pivotal role in facilitating the transition of power. On the same day of his resignation as temporary president, he accepted the opposition's proposal to form a coalition government.
Resignation as Prime Minister
Facing growing pressure from the opposition, Ghannouchi resigned from his position as Prime Minister on February 27, 2011. He cited his reluctance to make decisions that could endanger lives as the reason for his resignation.
