Early Life and Education
François-Philippe Champagne was born and raised in Canada. He earned his Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Montreal and a Master of Laws degree from Case Western Reserve University.
Business Career
Champagne began his business career in the operations department for Elsag Bailey Process Automation in Europe and Asia. In 1999, he moved to ABB Ltd in Switzerland, where he worked as Vice President of Corporate and General Counsel. In 2008, he became Director of Strategic Development for Amec, an engineering firm in London.
Political Career
Member of ParliamentIn 2015, Champagne was elected as the Member of Parliament for the Quebec riding of Saint-Maurice—Champlain. He was re-elected in 2019, receiving 62.8% of the vote in the district.
Minister of International Trade
In January 2017, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointed Champagne as Minister of International Trade. He served in this role until July 2018, when he was appointed Minister of Infrastructure and Communities.
Minister of Foreign Affairs
In November 2019, Champagne was promoted to Minister of Foreign Affairs. His appointment was a response to the need to address issues such as the renegotiation of NAFTA and strained relations with China and Saudi Arabia.
International Diplomacy
In the wake of the downing of Ukrainian Flight PS752 in Tehran in January 2020, Champagne led a group of countries whose citizens were killed in the crash. He sought a thorough and impartial investigation into the tragedy.
