Biography of Clara Schumann

Clara Schumann was a German pianist and composer, widely known as the wife of composer Robert Schumann and the daughter of renowned piano teacher Friedrich Wieck. She was born on September 13, 1819, in Leipzig.

Early Career and Marriage

Clara began giving public concerts at the age of 10. Around the same time, Robert Schumann became a student of Wieck. His admiration for Clara, combined with his awe of her accomplishments, gradually developed into love. On September 12, 1840, they got married.

Musical Career and Family Life

Clara excelled in performing her husband's music and continued to play his compositions in concerts even after his death. However, a significant portion of her time was devoted to their eight children, as well as caring for Robert during his periods of depression and mental illness. After Robert Schumann's tragic death in 1856, Clara received great support from Johannes Brahms. Robert Schumann had warmly welcomed Brahms as a new genius of German music, and Clara upheld her husband's opinion by performing Brahms' compositions.

Accomplishments and Legacy

Clara Schumann holds an esteemed position among the pianists of the 19th century. As a true virtuoso, she avoided flashy displays and played with poetic inspiration and deep understanding of the music she performed. She was also an exceptional educator and taught a class at the Frankfurt Conservatory. Clara Schumann composed piano music, including a piano concerto in A minor, as well as songs and cadenzas for Mozart and Beethoven's concertos. She passed away in Frankfurt on May 20, 1896.
