Early Life and Naval Career

Charles Edward Dobson was born on January 1, 1885. He joined the Royal Navy and became a submariner, serving in World War I.

Intervention in the Russian Civil War

In 1919, Dobson was sent to Russia to assist the White Army on the Northern Front. On August 18, he commanded a flotilla of torpedo boats in the Gulf of Finland.

Raid on Kronstadt

Dobson's flotilla daringly penetrated the heavily fortified Kronstadt harbor. Leaving one boat behind as cover, Dobson led the attack on Bolshevik warships. Lieutenant Commander Gordon Steele's CMB-88 torpedoed the battleship "St. Andrew the First-Called." Other boats inflicted severe damage on the battleship "Petropavlovsk" and sank the submarine tender "Pamyat Azova."

Victoria Cross and Honors

For this audacious feat, Dobson was awarded the Victoria Cross, which is now displayed at the National Maritime Museum. He subsequently rose to the rank of rear-admiral before passing away on June 26, 1940.
