Early Life and Naval CareerWalther Warzecha, a renowned German naval officer, was born on March 1, 1944. On April 1, 1909, he embarked on his naval career as a cadet. After completing training at the Naval Academy and serving on the battleship "Nassau," he was promoted to lieutenant on September 19, 1912.
World War I and Submarine Service
During World War I, Warzecha actively participated in combat operations, earning the rank of Oberleutnant zur See on May 2, 1915. In August 1916, he joined the submarine fleet and commanded UC-1 from March to July 1917. Subsequently, he served as a flag lieutenant for the 2nd Submarine Flotilla "Flanders" and commanded submarines UC-71 from January to September 1918 and UB-148 from September 19 to November 26, 1918.
For his valor in combat, Warzecha received the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd Class.
Post-War Service
After the war, Warzecha remained in the navy. He commanded the 2nd Coastal Defense Battalion on September 1, 1919, and the 6th Battalion on October 1, 1920. From March 19, 1921, to January 31, 1922, he served as a naval liaison officer to the Reichswehr High Command.
Warzecha went on to hold various positions within the German Navy. He served as an instructor and company commander at the Naval Academy in Mürwik from April 1, 1924, transferred to the Naval Defense Department on April 6, 1925, and served as a navigation officer on the battleship "Elsass" from October 3, 1928.
Rise to Leadership
Warzecha's naval career reached new heights in the 1930s. On February 26, 1930, he joined the staff of the "Ostsee" Naval Station and became the 1st Adjutant on June 10. He commanded the 2nd Battalion of the Shipyard Cadre Division "Ostsee" from October 6, 1932, and the Chief of Staff of the "Ostsee" Naval Station from September 24, 1934.
From October 2, 1937, to October 31, 1938, Warzecha commanded the battleship "Admiral Graf Spee." He went on to head the Administration Department of the Naval High Command (OKM) from November 1, 1938, to February 14, 1942.
Grand Admiral and Commander of Naval Defense
In April 1944, Warzecha was promoted to Grand Admiral and appointed Commander of Naval Defense. This appointment granted him authority over all services within the German Navy, effectively consolidating the administrative and economic affairs of the entire force.
On January 25, 1945, Warzecha received the Knight's Cross of the War Merit Cross with Swords for his military contributions. Following the suicide of Grand Admiral Hans-Georg von Friedeburg on May 24, 1945, he became the most senior naval officer and effectively the head of the German Navy.
Post-War Arrest and Release
Warzecha was arrested by the Allies on July 22, 1945, and remained in custody until his release on February 21, 1947.
