Early Life and Education
Sir Edmund Carrington was born into an aristocratic family in England. His father, Reverend Codrington Carrington, owned vast plantations in Barbados, and the family traced their lineage back to Sir Michael de Carrington, who served as the standard bearer for Richard I the Lionheart.
Legal Career
Carrington was highly educated and became a prominent lawyer. He was knighted in 1801 and appointed as the Chief Justice of Ceylon, a position he held from 1801 to 1806. After his tenure in Ceylon, he became a member of the House of Commons.
Personal Life
In 1801, shortly before his departure for Ceylon, Carrington married Pauline Belly (1784-1823). After her passing, he remarried in 1830 to Mary Anne Keppel.
Literary Contributions
Carrington made significant contributions to legal scholarship. Notable works include his "Inquiry into the Law relative to public assemblies of the people" (1819) and "Letter to the marquis of Buckingham on the condition of prisons" (1819), which addressed pressing social and legal issues of the time.
