Colin Calderwood
Colin Calderwood is a former Scottish football player and coach, born on January 20, 1965, in Stranraer, Scotland.
Playing Career
Calderwood's playing career spanned several English clubs, including Mansfield Town, Swindon Town, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, and Notts County. He was a defender known for his tenacity and leadership qualities.
International Career
From 1995 to 1999, Colin represented the Scottish national team, earning 36 caps and scoring one goal. He played in the 1996 European Championship and the 1998 FIFA World Cup.
Coaching Career
After retiring from playing, Calderwood embarked on a coaching career. He began as the manager of Tottenham Hotspur's reserve team before taking over as manager of Northampton Town in 2003. He guided Northampton to promotion to the First Football League in 2006 and moved to Nottingham Forest that same year.
At Nottingham, Calderwood achieved success by leading the "Tricky Trees" to promotion to the Championship in 2008. However, he left the club in December of the same year.
In 2009, Calderwood served as joint caretaker manager of Newcastle United alongside Chris Hughton. He returned to Scotland in 2010 to coach Hibernian, but was dismissed the following year due to poor results.
Early Career at Mansfield Town
Calderwood began his professional career at Mansfield Town, signing his first contract in 1982. He played 117 matches for the "Stags" over three and a half years, scoring two goals.
Success at Swindon Town
In 1985, Swindon Town acquired Calderwood for £30,000. Under manager Lou Macari, he became an integral part of a young and talented Swindon team. He was named captain and made his debut in August 1985.
Over the next three seasons, Calderwood was a key figure in Swindon's promotion to the Fourth Division and then to the Second Division. He was named the club's Player of the Year in the 1985-86 season.
Controversies and Return to the Premier League
Swindon's success was marred by a money laundering scandal that resulted in the club's demotion to the Third Division. However, the decision was later reversed, keeping Swindon in the Second Division.
Despite the financial problems, Calderwood remained a stalwart defender for Swindon. He helped guide the team back to the Premier League in 1992-93 under the management of Glenn Hoddle, defeating Leicester City in the final of the play-offs at Wembley.
