Colin Campbell, 3rd Earl of Argyll, was a renowned Scottish baron and military commander during the reign of King James V.
Early Life and Regency Council
Born as the son of Archibald Campbell, 2nd Earl of Argyll, Colin Campbell was orphaned after his father's death at the Battle of Flodden. During the regency of the Duke of Albany, Argyll gained prominence as a member of the regency council and an ardent supporter of Albany's pro-French policy. He held the position of King's Lieutenant in Western Scotland and the Hebrides, responsible for maintaining order and collecting royal rents in the Gaelic-speaking regions.
Loyalty to Albany
Argyll successfully kept the unruly Highland clans in check throughout James V's minority, contributing to the stability of the Western Highlands despite the weakness of the central government. Moreover, Argyll retained a substantial portion of the royal rents he collected for his own use. Despite Albany's removal as regent in 1524, Argyll remained a steadfast supporter.
Participation in Lennox's Rebellion
In 1526, Colin Campbell joined the failed rebellion led by the Earl of Lennox against King James V. He later allied himself with the king after he fled Edinburgh. As a loyal subject, Argyll's military leadership and administrative skills proved invaluable to King James V, contributing to his successful consolidation of power and the establishment of centralized rule in Scotland.
