Colin Barrett: A Biography

Colin Barrett, the second most important person in the airline company Southwest Airlines, is an incredibly high-ranking female executive in the aviation industry. She was born in 1944 in the small town of Bellows Falls, Vermont. When she was born, her father served in the navy as a mechanic, while her mother worked as a keypunch operator, dedicating her life to her family. Colin once said, "My mother was our fortress. She worked tirelessly her entire life, and I helped take care of my younger brothers."

Colin attended a Catholic school and was known as a diligent and exceptional "good little Irish Catholic girl." In order to achieve results, she had to work hard and she worked tirelessly day after day. After completing school, Colin attended college and obtained her degree in just two years. In 1968, Colin became a legal secretary for Herb Kelleher, who would later become her mentor and advisor. She quickly learned and proved to be extremely responsible. Colin accompanied Kelleher to business meetings and soon became well-versed in the intricacies of the production process. In 1978, she became the corporate secretary of the Southwest Airlines Board of Directors. Colin continued to work hard and develop her knowledge and skills. Finally, in 2001, she was appointed as the company's president and has remained in this leadership position ever since.
