Swiss-French Mathematician and Astronomer
Conrad Dasypodius (c. 1530-1601)was a Swiss-French mathematician and astronomer who served as a professor at the University of Strasbourg.
Copernicus's Heliocentric Theory
In 1568, Dasypodius published a work defending Nicolaus Copernicus's heliocentric system of the world: "Hypotyposes orbium coelestium congruentes cum tabulis Alfonsinis et Copernici seu etiam tabulis Prutenicis editae a Cunrado Dasypodio." This publication contributed to the dissemination of Copernicus's revolutionary ideas about the planetary system.
Strasbourg Cathedral's Clock
From 1572 to 1574, Dasypodius oversaw the construction of the famous astronomical clock in Strasbourg Cathedral. This remarkable timepiece is a testament to Dasypodius's skill as both a mathematician and an astronomer.
Heron of Alexandria's Works
Dasypodius also made significant contributions to the field of geometry by translating several works by Heron of Alexandria from Greek into Latin. This made Heron's mathematical knowledge accessible to a wider audience in Western Europe.
