Early Career and Club Transfers
Ioan Ciobanu began his professional football career with FC Brașov. After impressing with Brașov, he moved to Dinamo București, Rapid București, and Progresul București.
Move to Ukraine and Return to Romania
In 2004, Ciobanu joined Volyn Lutsk in the Ukrainian Premier League. He made his debut against FC Illichivets Mariupol on July 20, 2004. After a brief stint in Ukraine, he returned to Romania in 2006, joining Pandurii Târgu Jiu. Later that year, he transferred to Politehnica Iași.
Second Stint at Volyn Lutsk
In the summer of 2010, Ciobanu made a comeback to Volyn Lutsk. During his second stint with the club, he featured in 20 matches and scored one goal.
International Career
Ciobanu represented the Romanian national team once in February 2000, in a friendly match against Cyprus. Romania emerged victorious with a 3-2 scoreline.
