As a member of the Admiralty, he was dispatched to negotiate with Oliver Cromwell regarding maritime laws, including the controversial Navigation Act. Memory Preserved
Witsen's legacy is preserved in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, which houses a commemorative medal in his honor. The medal features his bust on one side and the crest of the Witsen family on the other, bearing the motto "Candide et Cordate" (Sincerely and Prudently), reflecting his character and statesmanship.
