Early Life and Drug Dealing
Born and raised in Manhattan's Lower East Side, Coss Marte was surrounded by poverty, crime, and drugs from an early age. At just 13, he began selling marijuana, later expanding to include cocaine and other substances. By the age of 19, he was earning over $2 million annually as a drug dealer, sometimes making $30,000 in a single day.
Arrest and Incarceration
At the age of 23, Marte's drug-dealing empire crumbled when he was arrested and sentenced to seven years in prison. At the time, he was severely overweight, weighing over 230 pounds at 5'8". Prison doctors warned him that he had high blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and that he could die before his release.
Prison "Gym" and Transformation
Undeterred, Marte began working out in his tiny prison cell. Using basic exercises that required no equipment, he shed over 70 pounds in six months. Marte's prison workout regimen became known as "Jailhouse Strong."
Post-Prison Struggles
Upon his release, Marte faced the stigma associated with his criminal record. He found it difficult to secure even low-paying jobs, and his post-incarceration struggles became his "second prison sentence." Desperate, he sold all of his possessions except for his sneakers.
Second Chance and "Coss Athletics"
Finally, Marte secured an internship with Goodwill Industries, which eventually led to a full-time job. He worked long hours, taking on additional cleaning jobs to make ends meet. Inspired by his prison workout, Marte developed a fitness program that incorporated "Jailhouse Strong" exercises.
Defy Ventures and Business Success
Marte's business idea caught the attention of Defy Ventures, a non-profit organization that helps individuals with criminal backgrounds become successful entrepreneurs. Marte won a $10,000 grant and launched Coss Athletics.
Impact and Inspiration
Today, Coss Athletics has nearly 400 clients and offers 14 classes per week, led by two certified personal trainers mentored by Marte. Clients are impressed by his transformation and his commitment to helping others.
Reflection and Gratitude
Despite his past, Marte does not regret his drug-dealing days. He believes that his experiences made him the man he is today, a successful and legitimate business owner.
