Biography of Costis Mitsotakis
Costis Mitsotakis is a Greek director who gained notoriety in 2012 when he was named the Unluckiest Man in the World by several news sources. He resides in the village of Sodeto in northwestern Spain. In 2012, all the residents of his village purchased tickets for the El Gordo Christmas lottery, which were distributed by the local housewives' association. On the day of the draw, it was revealed that every single ticket in Sodeto was a winner, resulting in an unprecedented prize of £600 million. The village erupted in celebration, except for one person – Costis Mitsotakis. Due to a stroke of unfortunate luck, he was the only resident of Sodeto who did not participate in the lottery. The ticket distributors had inadvertently skipped his house, and as a result, he missed out on a potential £83,000, which would have only cost him £4 like everyone else in the village. Out of the 70 houses in the village, Mitsotakis' was the only one overlooked. As news of this spread, he quickly earned the title of the Unluckiest Man in the World. However, Mitsotakis remained resilient. Firstly, he became a sort of celebrity, and secondly, his suddenly wealthy neighbor agreed to buy a piece of land from him, which had been unsellable for a long time. Mitsotakis had originally moved to Sodeto because of a woman, and even though their relationship ended, he chose to stay in the village. The El Gordo lottery is highly popular in Spain, with draws taking place since 1812. Many Spaniards take the day off for the Christmas draw in order to personally participate in the event. While it may not be fair to label Mitsotakis as the Unluckiest Man in the World, as there have been many more unfortunate circumstances experienced by others, the press gave him this moniker. However, the compassionate residents of Sodeto could not bear such blatant injustice towards their neighbor and decided to allocate a portion of their winnings to him.
