Early Career
Gardner made his professional debut for Aston Villa on December 26, 2005. Due to a shortage of defenders at Aston Villa, he was converted to a right-back and earned praise for his performances.
Aston Villa Success
In August 2007, Gardner signed a new four-year contract with Aston Villa, extending his stay until June 2011. His consistent performances at right-back and midfield led to him being highly regarded by pundits.
Move to Sunderland
On June 30, 2011, Gardner left Aston Villa for Birmingham City before joining Sunderland on a three-year contract. He played an integral role in Sunderland's League Cup triumph during the 2010-11 season.
