Early Life and Education
Crescenzio Sepe was born in Carinaro, Italy, in 1943. He completed his seminary studies in Aversa, Salerno, and Rome, specializing in philosophy and theology.

Advanced Studies and Diplomatic Service
Subsequently, Sepe pursued doctoral studies in theology and canon law at the Pontifical Lateran University and the University of Rome La Sapienza, where he also earned a doctorate in philosophy. Additionally, he graduated from the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome.

Ordination and Vatican Service
Ordained in 1972, Sepe joined the Vatican diplomatic service. From 1972 to 1975, he served as secretary of the papal nunciature in Brazil. Later, he held positions in the secretariat of Pope Giovanni Benelli and the Office of General Affairs.

Prominent Roles
In 1992, Sepe was consecrated as titular archbishop of Grado. He became General Secretary of the Central Committee for the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000 and Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples in 2001.
Cardinalate
In 2005, Sepe participated in the papal conclave that elected Pope Benedict XVI. In 2006, he was appointed Archbishop of Naples and elevated to the rank of cardinal-priest.
Controversies and Allegations
Sepe has expressed controversial views on the celibacy of priests and media coverage of clerical sex abuse. In 2010, he became embroiled in a corruption scandal involving the sale of a Vatican building at a deflated price. He was accused of connections to a construction magnate involved in contract irregularities.
