Biography of Donald Tsang
Donald Tsang, the former Chief Executive of Hong Kong, was born on October 7, 1944, in a modest and large family of a police officer. He studied at a local college and went on to obtain a Master's degree in Public Administration from Harvard University in the United States.
Career in Public Service
In 1967, Tsang entered the civil service and held various positions in the local administration, overseeing trade and finance matters. In 1995, he became the first Chinese to be appointed as the Minister for Financial Services in the British colonial administration. Shortly before the handover of Hong Kong to China in 1997, Tsang was honored with a knighthood in the Order of the British Empire.
Chief Executive of Hong Kong
In 2001, Tsang was appointed as the Chief Secretary, the second-highest position in the Hong Kong government. Initially, the communist authorities in Beijing were cautious about Tsang, who had spent many years serving under British governors. However, Tsang, with his extensive experience, proved his loyalty to the Chinese government and gained their trust. He became the Chief Executive of Hong Kong in 2005.
Reelection and Popularity
Tsang was reelected as the Chief Executive for a new five-year term. He won the election with a significant margin against his only opponent from the opposition. Tsang, who is known for always wearing his signature bow tie and attending Catholic church, enjoys great popularity. He is often referred to as a self-made man.
Personal Life and Interests
Donald Tsang is married and has two sons. He is passionate about hiking in mountain parks, swimming, and bird-watching.
