Early Life and Education
Dagmar Enkelmann was born in Altlandsberg, Germany, near Berlin. She completed secondary school in 1974 and went on to study history at Leipzig University. Graduating in 1979, she earned a doctorate in 1989. Her dissertation focused on the "Analysis and Critique of Concepts of Bourgeois Ideologists in West Germany: Identity Crisis of East German Youth."
Political Career
Enkelmann joined the Socialist Unity Party (SED) in 1977. Following the reunification of Germany, she became a member of the Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS), serving as deputy chair from 2003 to 2006. In 2004, she ran for state premier of Brandenburg, securing 28% of the vote, the best result for the PDS in the region since 1990.
In 2007, the PDS merged with the Electoral Alternative for Labor and Social Justice (WASG) to form The Left party. Enkelmann became a member of the new party.
Parliamentary Experience
Enkelmann was one of 143 East German Volkskammer members who retained seats in the unified German Bundestag after reunification. She was reelected to the Bundestag in 1994 but left in 1998. From 1999 to 2005, she served in the Brandenburg state parliament ("Landtag"), where she led the PDS group from 2004 to 2005.
In 2005, Enkelmann returned to the Bundestag as a member of The Left and became the leader of the party's parliamentary group, a position she held until 2013 when she lost her seat.
Other Activities
Since 2012, Enkelmann has been the chairwoman of the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation. She has also authored several publications on socialism and politics.
