Early Life and Education

On September 28, 1961, Diana Dale Dickey was born in Knoxville, Tennessee. Her mother, Missy Dickey, was a writer and political figure, while her father was named David.

Little is known about Dale's early life, but she has stated that her grandparents often took her and her siblings to the theater. She also grew up in a "chaotic, dysfunctional, loving family."

From a young age, Dale had a passion for acting and performed in school productions, including as Emily Webb in "Our Town." She attended the University of Tennessee from 1979 to 1984 but did not complete her Master of Fine Arts degree until 2015.

Theatrical Career

Dale's acting career began on Broadway, where she appeared in productions such as "The Merchant of Venice," "A Streetcar Named Desire," and "Sweeney Todd."

Film and Television

Despite her unconventional appearance, Dale has established a successful career in film and television. She has often portrayed antagonistic and eccentric characters, such as a drug-addicted killer in "Breaking Bad."

Dale has also appeared in numerous shows, including "Frasier," "The X-Files," "ER," "Rush," "Grey's Anatomy," "Criminal Minds," "2 Broke Girls," and "Why Women Kill."

In the dark comedy "My Name Is Earl," Dale played a daytime prostitute, Patty, while in "Shameless," she portrayed Kevin Ball's Aunt Ronnie. One highlight of her career was when Sean Penn cast her as Strom in the psychological thriller "The Pledge."

Breakthrough Role

Dale's career gained momentum in the late 2000s when director Debra Granik cast her as Merab in the drama "Winter's Bone." The film earned four Oscar nominations, and Dale won an Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female.

In 2022, Dale received her first lead role in the drama "A Love Song." She played Fay alongside Wes Studi, a Native American actor. Dale's performance earned her another Independent Spirit Award.
