American farmer grows the world's largest tomato
Dan MacCoy, an American farmer from Minnesota, never dreamed of growing something record-breaking in his greenhouse. However, he and his wife Sarah managed to grow an incredibly large tomato that is now a strong contender for the title of the world's largest tomato. Weighing in at 3.8 kilograms (8.41 pounds), MacCoy's tomato surpasses the previous world record of 3.5 kilograms set by American farmer Gordon Graham from Edmond, Oklahoma in 1986.
The journey to the record
Dan MacCoy, a resident of Minnesota, has a great passion for gardening and spends a lot of time in his greenhouse. While he never imagined he would achieve something remarkable, fate had other plans. Together with his wife Sarah, Dan grew a truly enormous tomato that is now vying for the title of the world's largest. The giant tomato weighed 3.8 kilograms (8.41 pounds), exceeding the previous record. Dan has already submitted his application to the Guinness World Records and is eagerly awaiting official measurements and the coveted certificate. If no one presents a tomato weighing more than 3.8 kilograms by November 1, 2014, then the record will be Dan's.
A happy surprise
Dan MacCoy feels incredibly fortunate to have become a sort of celebrity in the world of gardeners and horticulturists. He never specifically grew anything with the intention of setting a record, but he did notice that one of his tomatoes was growing differently from the others. The tomato initially grew to two kilograms and continued to grow, eventually reaching over three kilograms and approaching four kilograms. The weight of the tomato necessitated that it be tied up, as the plant could no longer support it. Sarah's old pantyhose came in handy for this purpose. The official weighing of Dan's gigantic tomato took place in the presence of a representative from the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth, a nonprofit gardening organization.
Achieving a dream
Dan MacCoy had previously attempted to grow large pumpkins but quickly realized that he would never achieve a world record in that area. However, he has had better luck with tomatoes. Dan confessed that he was unsure of when to harvest his enormous tomato because he had no certainty that it would not continue to grow larger. After 47 days without any changes, Dan finally decided to pick his nearly four-kilogram tomato from the vine. Now, he eagerly awaits recognition from the Guinness World Records, with a high probability of becoming the new record holder for growing the world's largest tomato.
