Early Career and Olympic Gold with Australia
Born in Australia, Carroll first rose to prominence as a member of the Australian national team that toured Great Britain in 1908. During the Olympics that year, Australia faced off against Great Britain in a single match that would determine the gold medal. Carroll played a pivotal role in his team's victory, scoring six points and securing Australia's Olympic triumph.
Journey to the United States
In 1909 and 1912, Carroll traveled to the United States as part of the Australian test team. After the second tour, he decided to settle in California permanently.
Military Service and Distinguished Honor
During the First World War, Carroll served with distinction in the United States Army. He rose to the rank of captain in the infantry and was awarded the Purple Heart for his bravery.
Olympic Gold with the United States
In 1920, Carroll returned to the Olympic stage, this time representing the United States as both a player and coach. In the only match of the tournament against France, Carroll's team prevailed once again. With this victory, Carroll became a two-time Olympic champion, making history as the first player to achieve such a feat in rugby.
