Biography of Mat Rogers

Mat Rogers (born February 1, 1976) is an Australian professional rugby player who played for the Gold Coast Titans in the National Rugby League. He is the son of the late Steve Rogers, a legend of the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks team.

Early Life and Rugby Career

Rogers was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. He started playing both rugby league and rugby union at a young age, but excelled more in the latter. He had the opportunity to play for the Australian Schoolboys representative team, where he faced young players like Johnny Wilkinson and future star Jonah Lomu.

Deciding to dedicate his life to rugby, Rogers joined the Cronulla Sharks, the team his father once played for. Alongside his new center partner Andrew Ettingshausen, Rogers formed a formidable combination that troubled their opponents. The addition of David Peachey further improved the team's performance. Rogers set several records for points scored and showcased his ability to excel in tough situations.

However, a serious shoulder injury at the end of the successful 2000 World Cup campaign forced him to give up his dream of moving from the flank to the center position. Despite the injury, he still scored the most points in the entire tournament. After fully recovering, Rogers was sidelined for the entire 2001 season due to the injury. It was his last season with the Sharks.

Rugby Union and Controversies

Following the 2001 season, Rogers switched to rugby union. He made his debut in the Australian national rugby union team alongside Wendell Sailor in a training match against France in June 2002. After the game, Rogers and Sailor became the 41st and 42nd Australian players at the international level.

However, the transition from the Sharks to rugby union was not easy for Rogers. He found himself in several media scandals regarding the state of Australian rugby compared to the level of training in the union team. One notable controversy involved a questionable story about a fight with a fan at a nightclub in 2004.

Return to Rugby League

On August 28, 2006, it was announced that Rogers had suffered a severe knee injury and would be unable to participate in the upcoming matches, although he would return by the end of the season. The Daily Telegraph conducted an investigation and found that Rogers had missed 21 out of 61 matches while playing for the Waratahs and 16 out of 57 matches during his rugby union career. Overall, he missed 31 games out of 118 possible, meaning he spent thirty percent of his career as a spectator.

In December 2006, Rogers' contract with the Waratahs expired, and he decided to leave rugby union. In 2007, he returned to rugby league and joined the Gold Coast Titans. He quickly became one of their best players, despite missing several matches due to a broken kneecap.

In the 2008 season, Rogers continued to play for the Titans. However, he was suspended from playing for a period of time, not due to injury, but for a dangerous tackle he made against a player from the Parramatta Eels, Luke Burt.

On October 26, 2008, Rogers married model and media personality Chloe Maxwell in Gold Coast.
