Daniel Raymond Massey was born on October 10, 1933, in London. His parents were actors Raymond Massey and Adrianne Allen. In 1929, they got married, but they divorced in 1939 under unusual circumstances, inspiring the creation of the comedy film "Adam's Rib" by screenwriters Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin. After their divorce, Raymond Massey married Dorothy Whitney, and William Dwight Whitney married Adrianne Allen.

Daniel's younger sister, Anna Massey, also became an actress. Despite their parents' divorce, Daniel and Anna had a happy childhood, mostly raised by their mother and stepfather. Their father, Raymond Massey, built a successful acting career in the United States but was not actively involved in their lives.

Daniel made his first appearance on the big screen in the war drama film "In Which We Serve" in 1942, alongside his godfather Noel Coward. After completing his education at Eton and Cambridge, Daniel's acting career began in 1958 with the controversial drama "Women in Love," which featured explicit scenes. He also played the character of Andrei Bolkonsky in the 1963 television adaptation of "War and Peace."

One of Daniel's most notable performances was in the play "The Entertainer" alongside Laurence Olivier in 1957. He later appeared in the film adaptation of the play in 1960. Throughout his career, Daniel Massey had numerous roles in theater, film, and television, including "Cromwell," "The Cat and the Canary," "The Jokers," "Mary, Queen of Scots," and "In the Name of the Father."

In 1968, Daniel portrayed Noel Coward himself in the film "Star!" and received a Golden Globe Award for his performance. He was also nominated for an Oscar. In 1982, he won the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for "Best Actor," and in 1995, he was honored with the London Critics Circle Theatre Award.

Daniel Massey married three times and divorced twice. From 1961 to 1967, he was married to Italian actress Adrienne Corri, and from 1975 to 1984, he was married to actress Penelope Wilton. They had a daughter named Alice in 1987. After divorcing Penelope, Daniel married her sister, Lindy Wilton, and remained with her until his death.

In the early 1990s, Daniel was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma. He passed away on March 25, 1998, at the age of 64 in London. He was buried in Putney Vale Cemetery.
