Biography of Daniel Smith
Daniel Smith is an Australian conductor who is considered one of the leading young talents in contemporary conducting. He was invited to visit Saint Petersburg in October and December 2013 by Maestro Gergiev. Smith has studied under renowned conductors such as Jorma Panula, Neeme Jarvi, Paavo Jarvi, Gianluigi Gelmetti, Robert Spano, Hugh Wolff, and Peter Gulke. He received his Master of Music degree from the Sydney Conservatorium and is a fellow of Trinity College in London and the American Academy of Conducting in Aspen.

Early Success
In 2011 and 2012, Smith made his debut as a conductor, performing with the Nice Philharmonic Orchestra and conducting in front of audiences of 2500 people three times. He has won numerous awards including the Orchestra's Choice and Orpheus Prizes at the International Fitelberg Conducting Competition in November 2012, the second prize at the prestigious Sir Georg Solti Conducting Competition in Frankfurt in September 2012, and the first prize at the Fifth International Luigi Mancinelli Opera Conducting Competition in Italy in August 2012. He also received the Orchestra's Choice Prize for "Best Conductor" in 2011 at the International Witold Lutoslawski Conducting Competition in Poland.

International Career
In recent years, Smith has split his time between Rome and Sydney, conducting orchestras such as the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Milan Symphony Orchestra, Odense Symphony Orchestra, Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, National Orchestra of Romania, Kadas Orchestra, Salzburg Chamber Soloists, and Sofia Orchestra. He has conducted at festivals in Europe, the United States, and Australia, including the Mozarteum Festspiele, Jarvi Summer Festival, Estate Musicale Chigiana, Aspen Music Festival, and the Sydney Olympic Arts Festival.
Opera Conductor
In addition to his success in orchestral conducting, Smith has been invited to conduct at the Rome Opera and has led productions of operas such as "The Barber of Seville," "The Knight of the Rose," "The Girl of the West" (directed by Giancarlo Del Monaco), "La Traviata," "Tosca" (directed by Franco Zeffirelli), and "La Boheme." He has conducted opera productions including "Rural Honor," "La Traviata," "Giovanni Skikki," and "Sister Angelica" at the Kiji Music Academy, "The Flying Dutchman" at the Monte Carlo Opera, and "The Swallow" at the Sydney Opera House. Smith collaborates with Alberto Zedda, a renowned Rossini conductor. In the summer of 2013, he made his debut at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, conducting the opera "A Journey to Reims."

Smith, often dubbed as the new Karajan, has garnered praise from audiences around the world. He will be visiting Saint Petersburg in October and December 2013.
