Dathan Ritzenhein: American Middle and Long-Distance Runner
Early Life and EducationDathan Ritzenhein was born on December 30, 1982, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He attended Rockford High School, where he established himself as a track and field star alongside fellow athletes Alan Webb and Ryan Hall. Ritzenhein's high school career culminated in his recognition as the 2007 Jamison Trophy winner for the nation's top male high school athlete.
Ritzenhein then moved on to the University of Colorado, Boulder. He placed fourth in the NCAA Championships several times, helping his team to a team title. Despite injuries that hampered his 2001 track season, he went on to a highly successful 2003 campaign, winning 11 titles, including the NCAA championships.
Professional Career
Ritzenhein turned professional on December 31, 2004, by winning a bronze medal in a 10-kilometer road race in Italy. In January 2005, he won the Belfast Cross Country and the United States 12,000-meter championships.
In 2006, Ritzenhein competed for the American national team but was forced to withdraw due to illness. He returned to form in 2007, setting personal bests in the 3000-meter, 5000-meter, and 2-mile races.
Olympic Trials and Beijing Olympics
Ritzenhein placed highly in the 2008 Olympic Trials, earning a spot on the United States team for the Beijing Games. He competed in the Olympic 5000- and 10,000-meter races, finishing in the top 10.
Post-Olympic Career
Ritzenhein continues to compete and has a dedicated following of fans in the United States who support him in his ongoing athletic endeavors. He is known for his competitive spirit, determination, and dedication to the sport of track and field.
