Biography of Dave Navarro

Dave Navarro is an American rock musician and talented guitarist who made a significant contribution to the development of alternative rock in the 1990s. He has been a part of several musical groups, including "Red Hot Chili Peppers" and "Jane's Addiction," and has also pursued several solo projects. Throughout the history of "Red Hot Chili Peppers," there have been six guitarists, but Navarro remained with the band the longest.

Navarro had a difficult youth, experiencing his parents' divorce and the loss of his mother at a young age. These experiences may have influenced his musical style, which is characterized by its expressiveness and emotion. His playing is a unique blend of heavy metal, psychedelic influences from Jimi Hendrix, and the rock trends of the early 90s. Navarro's experimentation and improvisation, reminiscent of Hendrix, have led him to constantly explore different styles and sounds.

Navarro was born on June 7, 1967, in Santa Monica, California. He grew up in a family of Mexican immigrants, with his grandfather being one of those who fled during the Mexican Civil War. His mother was an actress and model who appeared in the television series "Let's Make a Deal." Navarro was the only child in his family, but he witnessed constant conflicts between his parents. When he was seven years old, his parents divorced, and as he did not speak Spanish, he stayed with his mother.

Navarro's interest in music began when he accidentally heard Jimi Hendrix playing on the street while skateboarding. This sparked his passion for the guitar. At the age of 10 or 11, Navarro's father bought him an acoustic guitar, and he started learning the basics of playing the instrument. His cousin, who also loved and played the guitar, greatly helped him improve his skills. By the age of twelve, Navarro was already proficient in playing the guitar.

At the age of 15, Navarro experienced a traumatic event when his mother and her sister were murdered by Constance's jealous boyfriend. The murderer was found and put on trial, and Navarro testified as a witness. This tragedy deeply affected Navarro. After his mother's death, he moved in with his father and his new family. During this time, his academic performance in school declined, and he faced expulsion due to drug use and an unconventional appearance. Eventually, in 1985, he was expelled. Navarro later graduated from Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks and attended University High School in Los Angeles.

Music was always Navarro's main passion. Inspired by Hendrix's playing, he demonstrated exceptional musical abilities. As a junior high school student, he formed his first band, "South Dakota Railroad," and later, together with his friend Stephen Perkins (with whom he later played in "Jane's Addiction") and Rico Kavett, they formed the band "Dizaztre." However, the band did not last long and disbanded without achieving much.

In the mid-80s, the band "Jane's Addiction" was formed, with Stephen Perkins and Navarro's childhood friend Eric Avery as members. Navarro joined the band in 1986 and brought an explosive element to their music. His experimental approach, which he carried throughout his career, was groundbreaking at the time. "Jane's Addiction" quickly became a legend in alternative rock, contributing to the development of the genre. They played together for five years, becoming influential even though they did not achieve widespread fame. The band disbanded in 1991, largely due to drug issues. By that time, Navarro was heavily addicted to heroin, and after "Jane's Addiction" broke up, he sought treatment for his addiction, as did Avery.

In 1994, Navarro formed a small band with Avery, but they disbanded before accomplishing much. Navarro then worked as a session musician and collaborated with various artists, including Alanis Morissette. He also briefly played with "Guns N' Roses," but his playing style and the band's sound did not align. In the early 90s, with his psychedelic influences, Navarro stood out in the alternative music scene.

Eventually, Navarro joined "The Red Hot Chili Peppers," who were already popular and established. His debut with the band was at the "Woodstock" festival in 1994. In parallel, Navarro continued to play with Alanis Morissette, work with other artists, and gather material for his solo album. In 1998, he played with Marilyn Manson and collaborated with Nancy Raygun. Navarro remained with the "Red Hot Chili Peppers" for six years, recording one album. However, he left the band in April 1998 due to disagreements with the band's manager.

During this time, "Jane's Addiction" decided to reunite, and Navarro wholeheartedly supported their reunion. They even recorded an album together in 2002, but the collaboration was short-lived, and the band members went their separate ways again. Navarro then focused on his solo project, called "Spread."

Navarro has been married three times, with Carmen Electra being his third wife. They divorced in 2007. Currently, he is engaged in solo work and occasionally plays with "Jane's Addiction," who reunited again in 2009 and released another album.
