Early Life and Education

David Gill, a prominent figure in British football administration, was born in Reading, England. He pursued higher education at the University of Birmingham, where he earned a degree in Chartered Accountancy.

Early Career

Gill began his professional career at Price Waterhouse in 1981. Two years later, he moved to the United States to work in the San Francisco office. In 1986, he joined the BOC Group, where he held a role in corporate finance.

Corporate Engagements

Gill's corporate experience continued as he joined Avis Rent a Car System in 1990. Notably, he facilitated the sale of the company's European leasing business to GE Capital for $1 billion in August 1992. Subsequent to this, he held key positions at Proudfoot PLC, the London Stock Exchange, and First Choice Holidays, the third-largest tour operator in the United Kingdom.

Manchester United Tenure

In 1997, Gill embarked on a significant chapter in his career when he joined Manchester United as Finance Director. His contributions were recognized, and in August 2000, he was elevated to the position of Deputy Chief Executive, while also retaining his role as Finance Director.

Following the appointment of Nick Humby as Manchester United's Finance Director in July 2001, Gill's role was further expanded to Managing Director. This transition allowed him to focus on overseeing the club's day-to-day business operations, encompassing areas such as sponsor relations, marketing, business development, financial services, pricing of tickets and memberships, and property management.

In September 2003, Gill's unwavering commitment and exceptional performance culminated in his appointment as Chief Executive of Manchester United.

Football Administration

Beyond his responsibilities with Manchester United, Gill served as Vice-Chairman of the Management Committee of the defunct G-14, an organization representing leading European football clubs.

In June 2006, Gill's contributions to the sport were further acknowledged when he was elected to the Football Association's Board of Directors, succeeding David Dein of Arsenal.

Personal Life

Gill is married and has three children: sons Adam and Oliver, and daughter Jessica. Notably, Oliver has forged his own path in football, signing a professional contract with Manchester United.
