Early Life and Education

David Arellano Moraga was born on July 29, 1902, in Santiago, Chile. His passion for soccer was evident from a young age, as he excelled in the sport at both Escuela Superior N° 10 and Instituto Comercial de Arica.

Founding of Colo-Colo

In 1925, following a dispute between Magallanes and its players, David Arellano and his brother Francisco played a pivotal role in the establishment of a new club: Colo-Colo. Arellano captained the team and was instrumental in its early success.

International Career

Arellano made his debut for the Chilean national team in 1924 in a Copa América match against Argentina. He quickly became a key player for "La Roja," showcasing his exceptional skills as a left winger.

The "Chilena"

Arellano is renowned for popularizing the bicycle kick, a spectacular move known in Chile as "la chilena." He was known for his ability to execute this move effortlessly, wowing audiences with his athleticism.

Tragic Demise

On May 3, 1927, during a tour of Europe, Arellano suffered a fatal injury in Valladolid, Spain. He was accidentally kicked in the stomach by his own captain, resulting in peritonitis. His untimely death at the age of 24 sent shockwaves through the soccer world.

Legacy

In honor of David Arellano, Colo-Colo adopted a black stripe on its emblem as a symbol of mourning. The club's stadium, Estadio Monumental, is also named "Monumental David Arellano" in his memory. Arellano remains an iconic figure in Chilean soccer, remembered for his exceptional talent, leadership, and tragic passing.
