Umberto Caligaris: A Footballing Legend

Early Career and Club Success

Umberto Caligaris, an Italian left-back, began his professional career at Casale in 1919. During his nine years there, he helped the club qualify for the northern zone semifinals twice.

International Debut and Club Switch

In 1922, Caligaris made his international debut for Italy, replacing the legendary Virginio Rosetta. He became a regular fixture in the team alongside Rosetta, forming a formidable partnership that would later translate to Juventus. In 1928, Caligaris joined the Turin giants, where he won five consecutive Serie A titles (1931-1935).

"Trio della Legenda" and Olympic Bronze

Together with goalkeeper Gianpiero Combi, Caligaris formed the iconic "Trio della Legenda" at Juventus. In 1928, he played a pivotal role in Italy's Olympic bronze medal victory.

Record-Breaking International Career

Caligaris retired from international football in 1934 after playing in 59 matches, a record that stood until 1971. He was the first Italian player to reach the 50-match milestone.

Coaching Juventus and Legacy

After retiring as a player, Caligaris became the coach of Juventus in 1939. However, his tenure was tragically cut short by his untimely death in October 1940.

Umberto Caligaris remains a legendary figure in Italian football, known for his unparalleled skill, determination, and leadership both on and off the pitch.
