Early Life and Musical Beginnings

David Van Cortlandt Crosby was born on August 14, 1941, in Los Angeles, California. Raised with his brother in Santa Barbara, the siblings began performing at coffeehouses and clubs as teenagers. In the early 1960s, Crosby pursued his own musical path. He spent several years traveling and working as a folk musician until meeting Roger McGuinn.

The Byrds and Folk-Rock

Together, Crosby and McGuinn formed the Byrds in 1964. The band's unique blend of folk and bass-driven rock, dubbed "folk-rock," achieved immense popularity. Their 1965 hit "Mr. Tambourine Man" propelled them to stardom. The Byrds continued to release successful albums and singles, including "Turn! Turn! Turn!" and "Fifth Dimension."

Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young

Always seeking creative control, Crosby left the Byrds in 1968. He joined Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and Stephen Stills to form Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young (CSNY) in 1970. Their debut album "Déjà Vu" became an instant classic. However, the group disbanded the same year due to creative differences.

Musical Reunions and Later Albums

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Crosby reunited with CSNY members periodically, releasing albums such as "Whistling Down the Wire" and "American Dream."

Personal Struggles and Triumph

Crosby's personal life was marred by drug addiction and legal issues. He was arrested for cocaine possession in 1985, leading to a recovery program during his 11-month imprisonment. In 1989, a clean and sober Crosby briefly reunited with McGuinn and Hillman as the Byrds.

Health Concerns and Family

In 1995, Crosby underwent a life-saving liver transplant. He married Jane Dance in 1987, with whom he had a son, Django. He also has two other children: Anne from a previous relationship and James Raymond, who he discovered was his son from a brief encounter.

Recent Collaborations

In 2000, it was revealed that singer Melissa Etheridge had children through artificial insemination, later confirmed to be fathered by Crosby. Crosby's son, James Raymond, has since joined him as a musician in the trio CPR (Crosby, Pevar & Raymond).
