Biography of David Glasgow Farragut
Early Life and Naval CareerDavid Glasgow Farragut was born in 1801 in Knoxville, Tennessee. At the age of 9, he joined the navy as a midshipman. Three years later, he was tasked with escorting a captured English schooner to port, showcasing his exceptional skills even at the tender age of twelve.
Flourishing as a Naval Commander
Between the War of 1812 and the Civil War, Farragut proved himself to be a talented and dedicated naval officer. When the Civil War broke out, he took command of the Western Gulf Squadron, raising his flag on the ship "Hartford." From this vessel, Farragut would lead all his battles. In July 1862, Farragut became the first officer in the history of the US Navy to receive the rank of vice admiral.
Notable Victories and Legacy
Farragut achieved his first major victory in April 1862 by capturing the vital port of New Orleans on the Mississippi River. He went on to suppress the batteries at Vicksburg, lay siege to Fort Gaines, and engage in the famous Battle of Mobile Bay, which became the most renowned naval battle of the war.
Continued Service and Death
After the war, Farragut remained devoted to the navy and continued to command the screw frigate "Franklin" until his death. He passed away in 1877, leaving behind a lasting legacy as one of the most accomplished and respected naval commanders in American history.
