Early Life and Education
Dmitry Alexandrovich Kazhdan was born in Moscow into the family of Alexander Kazhdan. His passion for mathematics emerged at a young age, leading him to pursue a PhD under the guidance of A.A. Kirillov in 1969.
Mathematical Contributions
Kazhdan quickly established himself as a leading researcher in the mathematical school of Israel Gel'fand. His collaborations with renowned scholars such as I.M. Gel'fand, V.G. Kac, J. Lusting, G.A. Margulis (the Kazhdan-Margulis theorem), Yuval Flicker, and S.J. Patterson have significantly advanced the field of mathematics.
Emigration and Return to Israel
In the mid-1970s, Kazhdan emigrated from the Soviet Union to the United States, where he worked at Harvard University. As a devout Jew, he later adopted the biblical name David and repatriated to Israel in 2002. Currently, he holds professorships at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Harvard University.
